Ruby on Rails Developer
readMedia is looking for a <superlative> RoR developer to add to our growing team. We are a product company; we are not a consultancy. This means that you will be able to focus your efforts to help grow and evolve a code base over time. Also, our product is real (1000s of users, 100s of paying customers), large (100s of models, GBs of data), distributed and runs on the AWS platform. We deployed our first commercial Rails app in 2006 and we know our stuff. If this intimidates you, please move along, there are plenty of other great gigs out there. However, if this excites or intrigues you, then we want to hear from you!
Specifically, we’re looking for:- Real world experience developing, deploying and scaling RoR applications.
- A strong understanding of Object Oriented Programming and design.
- A strong understanding of database design.
- Proficiency in Ruby, RoR, SQL, HTML/CSS/Javascript, *NIX platforms.
- Someone who tests the code they commit.
- A team player with strong communication skills.
- Front-end development expertise.
- Distributed systems experience.
- B.S. degree in Computer Science (or equivalent).
We subscribe to the Joel Spolsky criteria for all of our employees: people who are:
- Smart, and...
- Get things done.
If this describes you, please send a resume and cover letter (our CEO loves cover letters) to jobs <at> readmedia <dot>com.

Customer Marketing Leader
You're smart, creative, motivated, and love a complex challenge. You excel at persuading people both in person and via the written word. In fact, you're an exceptional writer and have written for print, web and social channels. You're a comfortable presenter and are used to having an audience for your ideas every now and then. But it's not all words -- you have an analytical mindset and are great at turning data into action. You understand how to create processes, measure them, and make them better. And you're usually up for a giant burrito and a cold beer (or a few) on Fridays with your colleagues.
Did we just describe you? If so, you're probably a great candidate for Customer Marketing Leader at readMedia. We're a fast-growing software company and we need a talented marketing mind to join us and work with our customers in the higher education space. That means working to improve our customer orientation process and creating a communications strategy to support it. We want you to consult with our clients (via web, phone, and occasionally on campus) to help them become better users of our software.
You'll also own the execution of our content marketing strategy, developing and creating collateral materials (white papers, emails, articles, social media presence) that support our brand and positioning to both current and prospective customers. We want our customers to be delighted with readMedia, so a large part of this role will include developing customer feedback mechanisms, assessing satisfaction metrics, and developing communications plans and tactics to ensure we're exceeding our customers' expectations.
As our company grows, we expect our employees to grow with it. The ideal candidate will be able to come out swinging and eventually expand this role strategically. After a year, this role may look nothing like it did when you started. And that's a good thing -- it means you've grown and evolved to take on new challenges.
Ideal attributes:- Exceptional writing skills; demonstrated examples of persuasive writing
- Tech-savvy; understanding of social networking platforms within a marketing context
- Outstanding presentation and public speaking skills; polished, professional presence in person and on the telephone
- Excellent people skills; a natural communicator with strong conversation skills
- Organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated; able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Energetic and highly motivated to succeed
- Experience planning/executing data-driven web-based marketing campaigns
- Concrete understanding of web marketing metrics: Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Email campaign stats
- Experience creating marketing collateral like customer case studies, white papers, and presentations
- 2-4 years professional work experience or internships, preferably with an entrepreneurial technology company
- 4-year college degree and demonstrated extracurricular leadership roles or work experience in college
- Must be able to work in an office in downtown Albany, NY for the foreseeable future
Don't just send a resume! You must send a cover note that tells us a bit about you, what you're especially good at or like to work on, why you're interested in the position, and what you think you bring to the table. This note is a really important requirement. Please also include your salary history. Send it to Colin at jobs < at > readMedia < dot > com.
